Oil Painting
Robert Davidson uses thick layers of paint to create a political oil painting of a Tibetan Monk in 1953 during the Battle of Chamdo. His face is resigned to the fate of the Tibetan people. His eyes are downcast as he prays. The monk’s scarlet and gold robe draped around his shoulders while he prays.
There is little to be seen in the background of the oil painting. The monk almost appears to be harshly lit by the sun – giving him a sharp contrasting shadow.
This came from a collection of a well traveled Beverly Hills collector. It is an original work that was held by the collector who even wrote NFS! (Not for sale). The translation of the Chinese characters refers to ” What goes around comes around” or Karma referring to the Chinese. This was done during the time that the Chinese invaded Tibet and has Political significance. This is a well done portrait of a Tibetan Monk who is praying. The style of the painting is thick impasto on wood board. The painting is in very good condition for being 65 years old. It is in a minimalist gold wood frame.
Biography
A true piece of history! Battle of Chamdo – The Battle of Chamdo (Chinese: 昌都战役) occurred from 6 through 19 October 1950. It was a military campaign by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) against a de facto independent Tibet in Chamdo after months of failed negotiations. The campaign aimed to not to invade Tibet per se, but to capture the Tibetan army in Chamdo, demoralize the Lhasa government, and to exert pressure to get Tibetan representatives to agree to negotiations in Beijing and sign terms recognizing China’s sovereignty over Tibet. The campaign resulted in the capture of Chamdo and further negotiations between the PRC and Tibetan representatives that eventually resulted in the incorporation of Tibet into the People’s Republic of China.
