For those unfamiliar with the area the historical landmarks of the Yucatan Peninsula go back approximately 70 million years, with the Chicxulub meteorite which landed off of the north west corner of the peninsula and left a crater that is still visible to this day. Due to the impact of the meteorite and the peninsula’s delicate limestone geology the landscape has eroded over time creating the Sac Aktun underground river system which is the largest underground river in the world and cenotes, fresh water sinkholes that are a great way to cool off on a hot day in the jungle.

For those who are interested in the more civilized part of history, the Yucatan Peninsula has long been home of one of the most famous civilizations, The Mayans. The peninsula is dotted with Mayan Ruins including some of the most recognizable, such as Chichen Itza which is a Unesco World Heritage site and has been classified as one of the ¨Seven Wonders of the World.¨ The Mayan Culture is alive here, with Mayancultural tours, traditional Temazcal purification ceremonies as well as gourmet restaurants serving prehispanic food with a modern flare.

For those who like the water, the Peninsula is also home to the MesoAmerican reef, the second largest reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia which runs from Isla Contoy in the north all the way down to Honduras in the south. The Island of Cozumel is located directly east from the town of Playa del Carmen and is known for its scuba diving as well as the nature reserve on the south point with crystal clear turquoise water where families can play and snorkel with manta rays and sea stars. To the north is the island of Isla Mujeres famous as a pilgrimage site to the goddess Ixchel and now recognized for Playa Norte, one of the top ten beaches in the world.

Wise Explorers personal favourite tours are to the biosphere reserves of Isla Contoy in the North from Cancun and Sian Kaán in the south from Tulum. Birds, dolphins, manatees, crocodiles as well as many endemic plant species abound in these two locations protected by the government who only allows a certain number of people to explore per day so as not to disturb the ecosystem.
